Hurricane Joan
A 20-ton container left Brookline on January 14, 1989, filled with 31,000 pounds of powdered milk and quantities of rice, beans, clothing and medical supplies to aid the victims of Hurricane Joan. The milk and food was collected in the schools and funds were raised (basically through mailings and house parties) for additional hundred-pound sacks of powdered milk and to ship the container. There was a grand public sendoff in front of Brookline High School with speakers including Brookline Selectmen and the
Lieutenant Governor at the time, Evelyn Murphy. A representative from Brookline traveled to Quezalguaque to meet the container and supervise the distribution of its contents.
