Cristo Rey Rural Health Center
In the summer of 2006 four BU Public Health students did a health survey in the rural communities surrounding Quezalguaque. One of the major finding was the difficulty in getting health care workers to this remote health center.
Since the fall of 2006, Brookline Sister City has been covering the cost of taxi fare to take health center employees to the remote center in Cristo Rey. Every morning the workers are picked up in town, taken to Cristo Rey and then returned to the urban center of Quezalguaque at the end of the day.
Gas prices are high in Nicaragua. It currently cost $240 a month to pay for this vital service. |
